A hope for Manta rays - Un raggio (di speranza) per le razze

Da qualche tempo si parla di finning e della pesca indiscriminata agli squali, ma pochi sanno che altri loro stretti "parenti" stanno correndo un grave pericolo: le mante, grandi razze filtratrici, e le più piccole mobule, rischiano di scomparire a causa di una pesca assolutamente insostenibile. L'allarme viene lanciato da Shark Savers e WildAid (due organizzazioni dedicate rispettivamente alla salvaguardia delle popolazioni di squali e di razze, e alla riduzione del consumo di prodotti da animali selvatici), con un rapporto chiamato "Manta Ray of Hope (un gioco di parole basato sull'inglese ray che si usa sia per Manta ray - manta - che per ray of hope - raggio di speranza).
Il rapporto documenta per la prima volta il declino a livello mondiale di mante e mobule a causa del commercio delle branchie; è infatti in grande aumento sui mercati asiatici la domanda di branchie di mobulidi che, bollite e seccate, vengono vendute per le presunte (ma tutt'altro che confermate) virtù terapeutiche.
Perché questa pesca è ancor meno sostenibile di quelle a carico di specie più tradizionali? Perché si tratta di animali molto grandi, quindi relativamente poco numerosi, ma soprattutto dal ciclo vitale molto lungo, e dalla riproduzione molto lenta. Le mante non depongono centinaia né migliaia di uova, bensì possono avere solo un piccolo alla volta ogni due o tre anni; quindi pur essendo pesci, la loro biologia è molto simile a quella dei mammiferi.
E proprio come nelle balene, una manta varrebbe più da viva che da morta, come rileva "Manta Ray of Hope", se è vero che il mercato delle branchie ha un valore di 11 milioni di dollari, che può sembrare ingente, ma è poco più di un decimo di quello turistico: il nuoto con questi spettacolari e mansueti animali infatti è un'attrazione per subacquei e apneisti nei posti più rinomati - basti pensare alle Maldive.
Tethys, che ha condotto studi anche sulle mobule del Mediterraneo, partecipa alla battaglia per la conservazione delle mante. Giuseppe Notarbatolo di Sciara, Presidente, che a "Manta Ray of Hope" ha collaborato personalmente, commenta: "Quello che sta succedendo a questi bellissimi animali è scandaloso".

ING: "Manta Ray of Hope - The Global Threat to Manta and Mobula Rays" is a recently released report which details the plight of rapidly disappearing manta and mobula species due to extreme fishing pressure, that is largely unknown by the general public or conservationists. It is a joint initiative by international conservation organizations Shark Savers and WildAid with the participation of top field investigators. The comprehensive report documents worldwide manta and mobula declines due to the trade in their gills, a fact that is driving mantas and mobulas to the point of potential population collapse.
The destruction of ray populations is the result of demand for their gill rakers, with an estimated market value of $11 million annually. That is a fraction of the value of manta and mobula ray tourism, which is estimated at over $100 million per year, globally. Mantas and mobulas are one of the most sought-after underwater attractions for divers and snorkelers.
Manta and mobula ray populations are severely impacted by any targeted fishing because they have extremely limited reproductive biology. These rays can take ten or more years to reach sexual maturity and typically produce only one pup every two to three years.
The gills of manta and mobula rays are dried and boiled for preparation as a health tonic that is purported to treat a wide range of ailments. Yet the report’s researchers did not find the gill raker remedy listed in the official Traditional Chinese Medicine manual.
Shark Savers' mission is to save the world’s dwindling shark and ray populations, while WildAid focuses on addressing the human threat to wildlife. The Manta Ray of Hope Project is a joint initiative that includes top field investigators, leadings scientists and researchers, all working together to further the conservation of manta and mobula rays; Tethys, which is conducting research also on Mobula rays in the Mediterranean, collaborates to the project. "What is happening to these wonderful animals is outrageous" says Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara, Tethys' President.

Ma per altri le balene non hanno prezzo

La proposta di un gruppo di ricercatori su Nature di stabilire un prezzo per ogni balena (vedi l'articolo precedente, balene in vendita) ha suscitato un'accesa discussione. I fautori della proposta sostengono che in questo modo gli ambientalisti potrebbero tutelare i cetacei "comprandoli" dai cacciatori, ma non tutti sono d'accordo. Sul sito della rinnomata WDCS (Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society) si spiega il perché. Ci sono motivi etici ma anche strategici e pratici: si rischierebbe di risvegliare l'interesse anche in altri Paesi potenziali cacciatori come la Cina e la Corea del Sud - e al Giappone non parrebbe vero vedere la domanda impennarsi artificialmente.
Inoltre stabilire delle quote può essere rischioso: come insegna il settore della pesca, queste sono spesso dettate più da motivi politici che scientifici. Un altro argomento è che lo sfruttamento da parte dell'uomo di animali dal ciclo vitale estremamente lento come quello dei cetacei è del tutto insostenibile. Ed infine, sostengono sempre alla WDCS, resta il fatto che l'uccisione di grossi cetacei resta una pratica crudele e disumana. M.J.

US researchers proposed, in the journal Nature, that the introduction of tradable quotas for catching whales could reduce the number of whales killed each year. Moreover, they say, this would possibly allow environmental groups to effectively buy whales in order to save them.

L'aveva già immaginato, anni fa, Jeremy Cherfas, giornalista esperto della moderna caccia baleniera; ora l'idea è stata riproposta da tre ricercatori americani sulla prestigiosa rivista scientifica "Nature": stabilire un prezzo per le balene, e metterle "in vendita". Le potrebbero comprare le associazioni ambientaliste per tutelarle, oppure i cacciatori - e in quest'ultimo caso il controllo sarebbe, se non altro, più efficace degli attuali bandi internazionali. Sarebbe un modo per aggirare quella che Cherfas aveva descritto come "tragedia delle risorse comuni": chi sfrutta una risorsa che apprtiene a tutti (cioè uccide una balena) ne ricava un profitto enorme, mentre la perdita è talmente distribuita da non venire percepita come reale danno. In altre parole, le balene non "appartengono" a nessuno e di conseguenza chiunque se ne può appropriare, con il risultato che nessuno è sufficientemente motivato a salvaguardarle.
"Stabilire un mercato delle balene, dice Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara, Presidente di Tethys, è una formula interessante, che andrebbe studiata per molti altri elementi minacciati del nostro ambiente, marino e non." M.J.

I pescatori di Torre Guaceto hanno avuto la "nomination" per il Premio Personaggio Ambiente 2011, promosso in collaborazione con greenreport.it, da giornalisti ambientali e scientifici italiani, e riservato a chi ha svolto un ruolo di rilevanza per l'ambiente in Italia.

Il progetto di pesca sostenibile nella Area Marina Protetta di Torre Guaceto, è infatti il felice esperimento realizzato nella località pugliese, che ha valorizzato la piccola pesca tradizionale utilizzando gli attrezzi di pesca meno impattanti.

Al virtuoso progetto aveva dedicato un articolo National Geographic Italia.

All about Mediterranean's sperm whales

On the 17th and 18th of November the 1st International Workshop “Ecology, Behaviour and Conservation of Sperm Whale in the Mediterranean Sea” took place in Ischia (Italy).

Organised by Menkab and Oceanomare Delphis, the meeting was a great occasion to summarise and update the current situation of the species in the Mediterranean Sea.

Mediterranean sperm whales are a unique undivided subpopulation, about which too many crucial information remain unknown.

The Mediterranean sperm whales are classified as Endangered by IUCN, with an estimate of less than 2500 adult individuals and a possible declining trend. Despite the efforts we don’t know about their movements inside the basin, nor the area where they breed.

The workshop brought together researchers from all over the Mediterranean Sea, from Universities and non-profit organisations, with the aim of exchanging vital information and creating new collaborations.

Four of our Tethys collaborators participated to share their experience and knowledge.

The workshop was fruitful and we all hope to come together again in a couple of years for the second run.

Gli zifii vittime della corsa all'oro nero (e non solo)

è apparsa ieri su "La Stampa" l'intervista a Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara che riportiamo qui di seguito, sul recente spiaggiamento di zifii in Grecia e in Italia.

L’ecologo del mare e quei delfini da salvare

Tra gli ospiti più o meno verdi del tradizionale concerto di Natale chez il presidente onorario del Fai, Giulia Maria Crespi, il signore dei delfini e delle balene m'appare deluso o, meglio, molto arrabbiato. Nulla però a vedere con la manovra Monti. «Sono furente perché degli animali, tutte specie protette dalle leggi, continuano a essere uccisi nel Mediterraneo dai sonar delle navi da guerra ma, soprattutto - fenomeno in forte aumento - dai suoni esplosivi delle navi che cercano petrolio e gas sui fondali marini (dall'eco di ritorno capiscono se ci sono giacimenti) con la devastante tecnica airgun», attacca Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara, 61 anni, veneziano d'illustre famiglia d'ufficiali di Marina, famoso ecologo del mare.

«Non ho nulla contro la ricerca del petrolio né contro le esercitazioni militari ma non sopporto l'arroganza di certi "poteri forti" che se ne fregano non solo delle leggi ma anche delle conseguenze drammatiche delle loro azioni». Presidente di Tethys, l'istituto di ricerca non profit per lo studio dei cetacei del Mediterraneo, docente di Conservazione della biodiversità marina all'Università degli Studi di Milano e ideatore di Pelagos (la grande area marina protetta dalle coste italiane alle isole francesi di Hyères) Giuseppe Notarbartolo ha ricevuto l'ennesima brutta notizia. «Tra il 30 novembre e il primo dicembre ben 5 esemplari di zifio, parenti assai più rari dei delfini, sono stati ritrovati morti. Tre nell'isola di Corfù; in Calabria, a Capo Rizzuto, gli altri due: una madre con il suo piccolo! Solo ultimo episodio di una lunghissima serie e punta dell'iceberg: non possiamo sapere quanti muoiono e sprofondano in alto mare». Chi sono mai questi poveri zifii? Spiega lo scienziato: «La cetofauna del Mediterraneo, assai ridotta rispetto a quella del Nord Atlantico, comprende 8 specie "regolari", ossia di esemplari che abitualmente avvistiamo in mare o ritroviamo spiaggiate. Tra queste specie - oltre alla balenottera comune, alla stenella striata, al delfino comune etc. - c'è lo zifio. Da adulto misura anche più di 6 metri; è assai difficile da avvistare perché, a differenza dei delfini che amano stare in branco, è guardingo, schivo. Vive in piccoli gruppi e s'immerge a profondità spaventose». Vere bombe sonore, traumi e lesioni all'udito, il racconto di Notarbartolo sulla fine di questi affascinanti mammiferi è da brivido. «Alcune specie sono molto sensibili al rumore. Colpiti dai suoni vanno in panico; emergono in maniera scorretta e muoiono per un embolo».

Non bastavano inquinamento, degrado, pesca eccessiva (“Già i capodogli sono stati massacrati dalle reti per la ·pesca del pesce spada”). Ora, è il j'accuse di Notarbartolo, c'è anche una corsa all'oro nero senza regole, ennesimo insulto al fragile e prezioso ambiente marino mediterraneo. «La fame di petrolio ha scatenato ricerche nelle acque più profonde. I governi, compreso quello italiano, hanno dato un'enorme quantità di permessi senza adeguate valutazioni dell'impatto di queste attività sulla fauna manna più vulnerabile. Tutti i nostri mari, dall'Adriatico al Mar Ligure, sono tappezzati di concessioni a compagnie (soprattutto del Nord Europa) che hanno navi specializzate in queste ricerche. Le prime vittime sono i cetacei. Avanti così, cambierà il Mediterraneo con effetti inimmaginabili». Notarbartolo che, grazie a sofisticati idromicrofoni, ha persino registrato le vocalizzazioni dei suoi amati cetacei (“Le balenottere emettono muggiti a bassissima frequenza; i capodogli battiti simili a quelli di un martello sull'incudine”) sostiene che, oltretutto, questo massacro si potrebbe evitare. Niente estremismi animalisti, solo buon senso. «Il mare dovrebbe essere un territorio nel quale pianificare attività e usare tecnologie nel rispetto dell'ambiente. Sappiamo, per esempio, che ci sono zone e stagioni più vulnerabili per i cetacei. Ma l’insensibilità di certe istituzioni e la tracotanza dei poteri economici rischiano di uccidere con la biodiversità la vera ricchezza del nostro Mediterraneo».

Zooniverse, by Scientific American, is home to the internet's largest and most popular citizen science projects, addressing research in the fields of space, climate, history. Among other, you can help researchers categorizing the calls of killer whales and pilot whales directly on the website.

The increasing number of acoustic recordings and the large call repertoire make it very difficult for scientists to go through the data. A single person would take months, and the outcome would still depend on a single persons’ interpretation.

So, everybody can help to classify the sounds that whales make, into distinct groupings. For example, in orcas there are over 150 identified types of call. Every time you match a pair of orca calls, you're casting a vote for those two calls to be considered 'similar'. With many people listening to each sound and casting a vote, researchers can build up a map of those calls that are more or less alike, to find patterns and groupings. Learning how whales communicate with each other will help addressing questions as: how well do different judgements agree, how well is it possible to categorize those calls, how large is the call repertoire of pilot whales, is size repertoire sign of intelligence, does this repertoire change during sonar transmissions? ITA Zooinverse, della nota rivista "Scientific American", è un sito che consente di partecipare a una ricerca scientifica nei campi dello spazio, del clima, della storia e, per quanto riguarda la biologia, dell'acustica dei cetacei. Quest'ultimo progetto prevede di classificare le vocalizzazioni delle orche e dei globicefali.

Si tratta di specie che hanno un repertorio acustico estremamente vasto e di cui sono disponibili una enorme quantità di registrazioni - tanto che una singola persona impiegherebbe mesi, senza contare che si trattarebbe sempre di un giudizio del tutto individuale. Per questo i ricercatori hanno predisposto una pagina dove chiunque può ascoltare dei suoni e accoppiarli a quello che ritiene più simile. Un numero elevato di tali abbinamenti permette poi di individuare schemi e raggruppamenti. Tra le domande a cui i ricercatori vogliono dare una risposta: quanto corrispondono giudizi di persone diverse, è possibile stabilire delle categorie di suoni, quanto ampio è il repertorio acustico dei globicefali (molto meno conosciuti da questo punto di vista rispetto alle orche). Krill plays an important role in the Antarctic food web and is the primary food source for whales and seals in the Southern Ocean - in addition to the penguins of Happy Feet. Recently, demand for these crustaceans has increased as they are being used as feed for industrially farmed fish. This overfishing, in addition to sea-ice loss, threaten to destroy stocks in key feeding areas for penguins, seals and whales .

Don't send X'mas cards, send a whale!

To be friends with no less than a whale is definitely an unusual proposal provided by Tethys with the aim of giving anyone the opportunity to contribute to cetacean research and marine environment conservation.
You can choose the “friendship” of a sperm whale in the Sanctuary, whether for yourself or as a gift, from one of six individuals. The individual you choose is recognisable from the fluke and from the particular pigmentation on the skin. The certificate will be sent by email and the cost is 5 euro.
Some of the individuals have been known to researchers for more than ten years during which time information has patiently been collected. “Friends” will have access to current information and future updates on new sightings. Nevertheless, this gift considerably contributes to the conservation of the animals and their environment.

Non spedire cartoline, manda un capodoglio!

Fare "amicizia" con un capodoglio: questa è la proposta di Tethys per le feste, con l'intento di dare la possibilità a tutti di contribuire alla ricerca sui cetacei e alla conservazione dell'ambiente marino. Come è noto l'istituto è dedicato esclusivamente alla ricerca finalizzata alla tutela degli animali e del loro ambiente e, in linea con questo, propone un modo originale per fare gli auguri agli amici, aiutando nel contempo gli animali e il loro ambiente.
Chi vuole l'"amicizia" di un capodoglio del Santuario può scegliere - per sé o come regalo - tra sei individui, riconoscibili dalla coda e dalla particolare pigmentazione sulla pelle; il costo è di 5 euro, l’invio del materiale è per email. Alcuni degli individui sono noti da oltre dieci anni, durante i quali i ricercatori hanno pazientemente raccolto informazioni; su questi animali gli "amici" potranno, anche in futuro, tenersi aggiornati, in occasione di nuovi avvistamenti.

Cetaceans suggest a new techinque for evolutionary biologists

Fossil records are the only direct evidence scientists have about the history of species diversity, but it can be full of holes or even missing, for certain organisms. The only hope in such cases is to infer historical diversity from modern DNA sequences, but such techniques provide incorrect results.
University of Pennsylvania evolutionary biologists have resolved this long-standing paleontological problem by reconciling the fossil record of species diversity with modern DNA samples, and the key to the new techinque were cetaceans: whales and dolphins are ideal for testing ideas about evolutionary diversification, as their fossil record is especially clear. Two days ago the European Commission in Brussels proposed today to forbid, with no exemptions, the practice of 'shark finning' aboard fishing vessels. Shark finning is the practice of cutting off the fins of sharks – often while they are still alive - and then throwing back into the sea the shark without its fins. The Commission proposes that from now on, all vessels fishing in EU waters and all EU vessels fishing anywhere in the world will have to land sharks with the fins still attached. To facilitate storage and handling onboard vessels, fishermen will be permitted to slice partly through each fin and fold it against the carcass of the shark. The aim of the new rules is to better protect vulnerable shark populations across the world's oceans.
Today's proposal strengthens the existing EU legislation banning shark finning, which allows by exemption and under certain conditions, to remove fins aboard and to land fins and shark carcasses in different ports. The Commission proposes that this should no longer be possible. As a consequence, EU Member States will no longer be able to issue special fishing permits, so that vessels flying their flag can fin sharks on board.

È uscita, due giorni fa a Brussels l’attesa Proposta da parte della Commissione Europea per eliminare le scappatoie presenti nel divieto dell’UE sul finning, l’inutile e crudele pratica che consiste nel tagliare le pinne dello squalo per poi rigettarne il corpo in mare. Si tratta, secondo Shark Alliance di un importante passo avanti nella protezione degli squali.
Secondo l’Unione Internazionale per la Conservazione della Natura (IUCN) ogni anno, in tutto il mondo, vengono tagliate le pinne a milioni di squali. Il Regolamento dell’UE, adottato nel 2003 e ancora vigente, risulta troppo indulgente e consente di fatto che tale pratica non venga scoperta o rimanga impunita. La Proposta, se adottata dal Parlamento e dal Consiglio dei Ministri europei, assicurerebbe che tutti gli squali catturati da pescherecci europei o in acque europee vengano sbarcati con le pinne ancora attaccate al corpo. Ambientalisti e scienziati hanno raccomandato questa politica come lo strumento più sicuro ed efficace per rafforzare concretamente il divieto sul finning.

"Abbiamo il capodoglio".
Sento la voce compiaciuta di Sabina mentre guardo il mare con il binocolo, mi giro e vedo la sua espressione soddisfatta, mentre mi sembra di leggere una scritta scorrevole sulla sua fronte che dice "eh eh, sorpreso, vero? Io lo so già per certo, tra poco lo vedremo".
Me lo aveva spiegato: loro hanno l'idrofono, l'idrofono fa la differenza.
È un lungo tubo di plastica come quello per annaffiare il giardino (almeno, questo è l'aspetto) che però ha dentro una lunga reticella arancione e altri corpi sensibili; è attaccato a un cavo lungo duecento metri ed è trascinato in acqua, a poppa.
Mi hanno mostrato sui monitor, nel caldo e piccolissimo ufficio informatico, quello che l'idrofono racconta, ed è una meraviglia della ragione.
In breve, il capodoglio annuncia la sua presenza con suoni vari, i più caratteristici dei quali sono i "clicks". Alle orecchie delle ricercatrici questi suoni raccontano un sacco di cose su quello che sta facendo il mirabile organismo e su quanto è lontano.
Ma quello che più mi ha colpito è quel che succede quando, dopo una lunga sequenza con variazioni, le Tetidi annunciano "Coda! ha fatto coda!" e sfrecciano per la barca inseguendo compiti precisi.
"Coda" è una sequenza precisa di clicks, per loro ben riconoscibile: è come se il capodoglio dicesse (probabilmente lo dice ai compagni) "Bene, io salgo".
Ora siamo chiamati a scrutare una fetta di mare, perché si sa che lui sta arrivando, emergerà in pochi minuti ma non si sa dove sbucherà.
Ecco, tutti sono pronti e silenziosi, e sperano - io lo speravo - di essere il primo ad avvistarlo. Minuti, lunghi sospesi minuti, silenzio assoluto. Minuti che segnano, evidentemente: ci ripenso spesso, sorpreso della persistenza e della intensità del ricordo.
"Ore sei!" grida una voce, vuol dire a poppa, tutti si girano, ma dov'è, non lo vedo, le ragazze di nuovo sfrecciano e hanno in mano macchine fotografiche con lunghi obiettivi, ecco! Lo vedo anch'io, un enorme tronco semisommerso che luccica con violenza nel binocolo, il famoso soffio inclinato - lo sento, sento il respiro -; come è strano, mentre lo guardo so che tra poco se ne andrà e allora cerco di vedere, di vedere più volontariamente del solito, per ricordare.
Mi scuoto perché veniamo dislocati come di consueto, con modi garbati ma fermi, in posizioni che non intralcino le operazioni: lo skipper ha il difficile compito di avvicinarsi all'animale nel modo corretto, che prevede velocità, angolo, esposizione alla luce, distanza e deve poter vedere il mare e le ricercatrici, che lo aiutano con segnali e indicazioni.
Siamo vicini, ora, tutti sono silenziosi; si sente solo il suo respiro, vedo bene il colore e cerco di registrarlo nella memoria, vedo la discontinuità sul dorso dove c'è la cresta del cranio, i grandi corrugamenti della pelle; si gira sul fianco - ecco! - una lunga striscia azzurrino chiarissimo sott'acqua: è la mandibola.
Continuo a guardare sforzandomi di afferrare quanto più posso, mentre sento le raffiche di scatti delle macchine fotografiche.
Più tardi, davanti ai monitor, mi diranno che l'amico è una vecchia conoscenza: Taccone.

Due filosofi alla rincorsa di capodogli

“Roby se seguiamo l’altro capodoglio finisce che passiamo un’altra notte in mare aperto, forse è meglio rientrare”, urlo da sottocoperta al comandante di "Pelagos", in qualità di responsabile della ricerca. Lui mi guarda scuotendo la testa e senza sentire ragioni immediatamente dirige la prua verso i click dell’individuo che ancora non abbiamo foto-identificato. Torno di corsa ai computer con un sorriso largo 54 denti e ci rimettiamo tutti a “caccia”.
Si sono mai visti degli skipper con cui bisogna insistere per interrompere un avvistamento e rientrare in baia o in porto? Normalmente è il contrario, cioè bisogna discutere a lungo per poter stare in mare.
Conoscevo da tempo Roberto Raineri e Paolo Pinto, titolari della società Flash Vela d’Altura, ed entrambi aspettavamo un’occasione per collaborare. Arrivò quando dovemmo trovare una nuova piattaforma per le ricerche in Mar Ligure. Mi presentai da loro e dissi: “potreste acquistare una barca per noi?” Dopo qualche attimo di sconcerto accettarono di buon grado l’idea e cominciammo insieme a cercare quella adatta ai nostri scopi. Dopo aver visionato alcune imbarcazioni, salimmo a bordo di un motor-sailer di 21 metri in vendita da qualche mese. Fu una sorta di folgorazione! Capii subito che sarebbe stata perfetta per noi, sarebbe bastato aggiungere qualche posto letto, approntare una zona per gli avvistamenti e fare qualche altra modifica qua e là. Credo di essermi comportata in quell’occasione alla stregua di una bimba capricciosa che urla: “Voglio solo questa!” E fui accontentata.
Da sei anni Roberto e Paolo, entrambi provenienti da studi filosofici, non solo ci consentono di solcare in sicurezza le acque del Santuario sulla loro imbarcazione e di avvicinare i cetacei in modo da poter effettuare le diverse tipologie di raccolta dati, ma ci aiutano giorno dopo giorno a decidere le rotte, a rendere omogeneo lo sforzo (un accorgimento tecnico, che servirà poi per elaborare correttamente determinati dati scientifici), a trovare gli animali, a gestire le relazioni con i partecipanti alle nostre crociere di ricerca, a risolvere i quotidiani problemi logistici, e con noi condividono i rischi della copertura degli onerosi costi del monitoraggio in mare.
L’uno con la calma e la ponderatezza che gli conferiscono i natali liguri, l’altro con una straordinaria carica vitale e la tipica simpatia napoletana, vengono da tutti noi definiti i comandanti, ma nella realtà rappresentano ben di più: sono parte integrante e fondamentale dello staff del CSR. You should not be there, should you?

If you, Tethys fellow colleagues and followers, may be somehow used to encounter mysticetes, in Egyptian waters we haven’t had the chance to spot them yet; so, when we received a call reporting humpback whales off Hurghada, our first reaction was “Oh come on, that is impossible!!” Luckily, images and videos were provided and the sighting was actually confirmed. This encounter, immediately brought to the public attention, tells us -researchers trying to assess abundance, distribution, presence and conservation status of cetacean in the Red Sea as well as members of the Red Sea caring community- two things: first of all, that “impossible” is a relative concept and, second, that our expectations and approaches are based on a pretty weak baseline. The surprise about this sighting, amazing and rare and surely awesome, reveals also something less romantic: what do we really know about these waters? The Egyptian Red Sea has been, in general, poorly investigated from a scientific point of view and, with urbanization and tourism industry growing fast along its shore, this “ignorance” is hampering many conservation initiatives. How can we protect if we don’t know what is out there? From this simple question, the Egyptian NGO HEPCA started, a year ago, an exhaustive research project targeting the marine megafauna: turtles, sharks and marine mammals are now the focus of our studies and we started understanding more about their ecology. There is still much to discover though! The Red Sea Dolphin Project is ready to set sail and carry out its second winter season, sailing the Southern Egyptian Red Sea on board the research vessel, monitoring cetaceans’ presence as well as enjoying the underwater coral reefs in pristine areas.

European Shark Week opening today - Si apre oggi la Settimana Europea dello Squalo

The fifth annual European Shark Week is starting today and will be running until Saturday, October 23rd. Launched by the Shark Alliance, a coalition of more than 100 conservation, scientific and recreational organisations, it is calling on European Union (EU) fisheries ministers to protect sharks from overexploitation and finning - the wasteful practice of slicing off a shark’s fins and discarding the body at sea.
Sharks’ slow growth, late maturity and small number of offspring make them especially susceptible to overexploitation, and slow to recover once depleted.
This year’s European Shark Week is calling for:
- A complete ban on removing shark fins at sea
- Shark and ray catch limits based on scientific advice and the precautionary approach
- EU and national protections for endangered shark and ray species
Sharks’ slow growth, late maturity and small number of offspring make them especially susceptible to overexploitation, and slow to recover once depleted.
During the European Shark Week member groups of the Shark Alliance, aquariums, dive groups, and other conservation organisations in at least 16 countries across the EU, including Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Ireland, Latvia, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Slovakia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, will be holding events, filming messages for fisheries ministers, and gathering petition signatures to urge policy makers to resist industry pressure and make the push to protect sharks.

ITA: Si apre oggi la quinta edizione della settimana europea dello squalo promossa da Shark Alliance, una coalizione di oltre 100 organizzazioni di ricerca, associazioni ambientaliste e ricreative, con la richiesta Ministri della Pesca dell’Unione Europea di proteggere gli squali dal sovrasfruttamento e dal finning – l’inutile e crudele pratica che consiste nel tagliare le pinne degli squali per poi rigettarne il corpo in mare.

- l'adozione di limiti di catture di squali e razze basati sulle raccomandazioni scientifiche e un approccio precauzionale;
- la protezione - a livello nazionale ed europeo - delle specie minacciate di squali e razze.
La settimana europea dello squalo durerà dal 15 al 23 ottobre, durante la quale i gruppi membri di Shark Alliance, gli acquari, i diving e altre organizzazioni ambientaliste in almeno 16 Paesi in tutta Europa, tra cui Belgio, Finlandia, Francia, Germania, Grecia, Italia, Irlanda, Lituania, Malta, Paesi Bassi, Polonia, Portogallo, Spagna, Slovacchia, Svezia e Regno Unito organizzeranno eventi, registreranno messaggi da inviare ai Ministri della pesca, e raccoglieranno le firme per una petizione che chiede urgentemente ai decisori politici di resistere alla pressione dell’industria della pesca e spingere per la protezione degli squali.

Tracking Cuvier’s Beaked Whales in the Pelagos Sanctuary

During the past summer, for the first time since Tethys carries out research in the Pelagos Sanctuary, a pod of six Cuvier’s beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) were eavesdropped and acoustically tracked for almost three hours. In the Mediterranean Sea Cuvier's beaked whales were often tracked using sophisticated acoustic tags and recorders, but only twice with horizontal surface towed arrays, by two different research teams. Despite several sightings occurring during the past years, this species was never tracked down by Tethys with a horizontal surface towed array - until this summer.

After almost six weeks I’m trying to piece together the memories about an incredible encounter with six Cuvier’s beaked whales peacefully swimming at the surface for more than three hours.
That day has been terribly hot and humid, with the temperature up to 38°C. The sea was mirror flat and the haze was flattering the summer colours and rendering all grey. The day was quite unfortunate with just a couple of sightings of striped dolphins in hours of navigation.
To find a bit of relief and coldness we just decided to jump into the water for a refreshing swim. Monica was the first one to get out of the water and to reach the sighting platform. With that flat sea she was craving to spot some pilot whales, a species that she had never seen before. And guess what? After not even one second on the observation point she started screaming “whale, whale, there is a whale!”. Of course, without even say “A” the people literally jumped out of the water. Everybody was ready for the "Big One".
Well, the "Big One" seemed to be disappeared. After more than 25 minutes it was not yet at the surface, something really unusual for a fin whale. But it was not a fin whale; it was a Cuvier’s beaked whale!
Cuvier’s beaked whales are some of the most "extreme" animals on the planet and one of the least known species of cetaceans. They are very difficult to detect visually at sea and to study, as they repeatedly perform long and deep dives, spending just a few minutes at the surface to rest. The characteristics of their sounds and their peculiar diving behaviour make it difficult even to follow them acoustically and to track their movements. Their acoustic abilities and features have been discovered only recently by using sophisticated audio recorders; Cuvier’s beaked whales do vocalize at great depth, at high frequency and with a narrow emission beam. Only little energy spreads toward the sea surface and this is why it is so difficult to even detect them. Horizontal towed arrays like the one that we use on the Pelagos R/V at Tethys, have never been really successful. This is particularly true for the Tethys cruises organized in the Ligurian Sea during the past 20 years; Cuvier’s beaked whales had never been eavesdropped and thus never tracked during field work.
So you can image our great surprise and excitement when the first beaked whale surfaced again with a second animal, then a third one arrived till they became six. A pod of six beaked whales was swimming close to the boat under the amazed and unbelieving look of the crew. These animals spent up to 5 minutes at the surface after performing short dives of about 25 minutes of duration. And it was actually during one of these short dives that Roberto, the skipper, and myself, while seating at the PC, noticed high frequencies click trains on the real-time sound spectrogram. We could not believe our eyes; could that be the clicks from the beaked whales or it was something else? The only way to find it out was to try to track the clicks; the risk to lose track of the animals was high but we were too excited about the idea of the clicks coming from THOSE animals. So armed with patience and hoping in some good luck we started following the clicks on the spectrogram and on the tracking software. And, punctually, a few seconds after the clicks disappeared from the PC screen, we could hear people screaming outside, indicating and pointing at the whales.
We made it! We just tracked Cuvier’s beaked whales for the first time in the history of the Tethys’ Cetacean Sanctuary Research Project. After this first attempt we repeated the tracking a few other times, just to be sure it was not only a matter of luck. And again the whales were there, just a few meters apart from the boat. So we actually made it!
After more than three hours we decided to let the beaked whales go, but just because we spotted some fin whales’ blows not far from us. But this is another story.

Tethys' dataset of cetacean sightings has been included in OBIS SEAMAP, the Ocean Biogeographic Information System Spatial Ecological Analysis of Megavertebrate Populations); this is a spatially-referenced online database, which was developed by Duke University. His purpose is to aggregate observation data from across the globe about marine mammals, seabirds and sea-turtles. Tethys' dataset comprises the work carried out between 1986 and 2010 during shipboard surveys, conducted mainly in the Mediterranean Sea, and especially in the Corso-Ligurian-Provencal basin, in the Ionian Sea and in the Adriatic Sea. The presence of cetaceans has been investigated also in the Atlantic Ocean (Canary Islands, Morocco coasts) and in the Caribbean Sea . The Tethys-ISPRA aerial survey dataset carried out between 2009 and 2011 has been processed as well .
The whole dataset, coming from 25 years of effort in research, includes over 8.700 sightings of cetaceans, accounting for over 69.000 individuals. The Tethys data set - probably the largest cetacean dataset of the Mediterranean - has been published on OBIS SEAMAP thanks to the support provided by the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) and ACCOBAMS; this may represent a significant contribution to the knowledge of cetacean distribution in the Mediterranean.

Lo scopo è di aggregare dati da tutto il mondo riguardo agli avistamenti di mammiferi, uccelli e tartarughe marini. The reform of the Common Fisheries Policy in ways which ensure the recovery of fish stocks and habitats, the promotion of best practice, the elimination of the most harmful fishing methods are the requests.

Tartarughe e cetacei: i possibili destini degli "spiaggiati"

“Il recupero delle tartarughe marine in Toscana: aspetti gestionali e sanitari. Lo spiaggiamento dei cetacei: possibili destini”

Nella splendida cornice della seicentesca Certosa di Calci (Pisa), con una galleria a vetrate che da l’impressione che i cetacei fluttuino nella campagna toscana, si è tenuto, lo scorso venerdì 23 settembre, sempre nell’ambito del progetto GIONHA, presso il Museo di Storia Naturale e del Territorio dell’università di Pisa, un seminario che ha affrontato due importanti tematiche riguardanti la gestione dell’ambiente marino. La prima, il recupero delle tartarughe marine, con particolare attenzione alla nascente Rete Regionale Toscana, ha visto tra gli argomenti la promettente realtà della Rete Regionale per la conservazione della fauna marina in Sardegna, cosi come il centro di cura e riabilitazione della Stazione Zoologica “Anton Dohrn” di Napoli.
Nell'ambito della seconda tematica, lo spiaggiamento dei cetacei, Gianni Pavan del CIBRA e Michela Podestà del Museo di Storia Naturale di Milano hanno illustrato la Banca Data Spiaggiamenti e le problematiche relative alla musealizzazione dei reperti, mentre Mattia Panin del Dipartimento di Scienze sperimentali e Veterinarie dell’Università di Padova ha discusso le recenti tecniche sviluppate per lo studio delle patologie nei mammiferi marini.
I numerosi partecipanti hanno potuto ammirare la collezione di scheletri di cetacei presente alla Certosa, unica nel suo genere trattandosi della più importante raccolta esistente in Italia per numero di taxa rappresentati (27), dei quali sette unici per i musei italiani. Tra questi, gli scheletri di Balenottera azzurra (Balaenoptera musculus), Balenottera boreale (Balaenoptera borealis), nonché Megattera (Megaptera novaeangliae) e Balena franca nordatlantica (Eubalaena glacialis).

Per molti l'Adriatico è un mare minore: acque troppo basse, spesso torbide, fondali limacciosi. Un mare per turisti che ne amano soprattutto le spiagge e le rive che degradano dolcemente. Pochi ne apprezzano la biologia e la varietà di vita; pochissimi lo conoscono per davvero. Questo è un libro sull’altro Adriatico, quello “sotto”, quello vivo e a volte dimenticato. Appunti, notizie, storie, raccontano di delfini, balene, tartarughe, pesci luna, squali, tonni, pesci, molluschi e crostacei che lo popolano così come riempiono le oltre 160 pagine di questo libro. Un mare che è come una culla. Le acque basse sono un rifugio, e se poi sono anche ricche di cibo ecco che diventano un ambiente accogliente e florido. Ma anche un mare fragile e delicato, messo in pericolo ogni giorno dagli scarichi di mille città, da una pesca intensiva, dalla maleducazione o l’incuria di chi non sa, per ignoranza o per pigrizia, apprezzarne le qualità oltre alle belle coste e ai porti accessibili.
Il libro è una raccolta di scritti, tutti ovviamente con un filo comune, l'Adriatico appunto. Sono capitoli, in genere brevi che raccontano di storie, di ricerche compiute, di curiosità biologiche; informazioni e notizie in genere difficili da trovare in quanto disperse, o perchè accessibili solo agli addetti ai lavori. Il tutto con linguaggio accessibile, nell'ottica della divulgazione scientifica.

The Cetacean Sanctuary Research season finale was spent in exceptionally hot weather, with a wonderful group of enthusiastic and dedicated international participants, who diligently joined the Tethys team to survey the Pelagos Sanctuary with unwavering passion and optimism. Their efforts were rewarded with multiple sightings of striped dolphins almost every day. We were thrilled that after weeks of observing elusive pods of this species, several of our sightings consisted of large groups of playful adults that came to bow ride and leap around our boat. We also sighted some smaller groups of adults with calves. In addition, the participants helped with some data analysis by matching photo-identification pictures of sperm whale flukes with our catalogue of known individuals. This analysis revealed a potentially unknown individual which was affectionately named “Leomas” by the participants. Other daily activities included a trip to the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco on Thursday, and later in the week we were also able to visit the beautiful town of Villefranche where we spent the night anchored in the bay. The fantastic attitude and atmosphere on board all week could not have made for a better end of season.
All the researchers from the Tethys team would like to send a special thank you to all the volunteers that have participated in the CSR research cruises this season, without whom our work would not be possible. It has been a real pleasure. See you next year!

L’ambiente marino è un ecosistema interessato da diverse attività umane. In particolare i possibili effetti sulla fauna marina del rumore di origine antropica (dall'esplorazione dei fondali, al traffico marittimo, alle esercitazioni militari, alle attività costiere) rappresentano una tematica di crescente interesse per la comunità scientifica, anche a fronte della recente Direttiva comunitaria 2008/56/CE che definisce il rumore sottomarino prodotto dall'uomo come “fonte di inquinamento” e lo elenca fra le pressioni che incidono sull’ambiente marino.
Lo scorso giovedì 22 settembre, nella autorevole sede dell’ Accademia Navale di Livorno, si è tenuto il seminario intitolato "Impatto del rumore antropico sui cetacei" dedicato allo studio dei fattori antropici che posso causare un impatto sui mammiferi marini nell’area del Santuario Pelagos ed in particolare nella zona dell’arcipelago toscano, nell'alto Tirreno) . Organizzato nell’ambito del progetto GIONHA (Governance and Integrated Observation of marine Natura Habitat - un progetto di cooperazione italo-francese realizzato dall’Agenzia regionale per la protezione ambientale della Toscana, l’Office de l'Environnement de la Corse, la Regione Liguria, la Regione autonoma della Sardegna e la Provincia di Livorno), il seminario ha affrontato questa complessa tematica grazie all'intervento di numerosi esperti tra cui Gianni Pavan, presidente del Centro Interdisciplinare di Bioacustica e Ricerche Ambientali dell’Università di Pavia (CIBRA), David Hughes responsabile del progetto di mitigazione del rischio delle attività militari sui mammiferi marini del NURC, Andra Iacoponi di ARPA Toscana e Sergio Ventrella dell’Osservatorio Toscano dei cetacei, nonché numerosi esponenti dell’accademia navale di Livorno che hanno introdotto le linee guida adottate dalla marina militare e gli aspetti normativi di tutela dall’ambiente marino. Il seminario ha evidenziato la necessità di analizzare maggiormente questa tipologia di inquinamento marino ai fini di una più efficiente tutela di tale delicato ecosistema.

The end of the Cetacean Sanctuary Research season is approaching, but the enthusiasm and passion for our work on Pelagos remain intact. The weather conditions at the beginning of the week prevented us from conducting our surveys at sea, so our participants and researchers had the opportunity to enjoy an educational trip to the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco. Early on Wednesday morning, our research vessel Pelagos set out to sea and promptly encountered our first group of striped dolphins. Several other pods of this species were encountered throughout the day until we finally anchored in the picturesque bay of Saint Jean Cap Ferrat for the night. The next day was equally as rich in striped dolphin sightings, many of which included calves. On thursday night we were joined by Massimo Demma and his wife and daughter, Stefania and Matilde. Massimo is the designer of the Tethys logo, and was one of the people who witnessed the creation and growth of the institute. His invaluable drawings of Mediterranean cetacean species are still shown to participants in lectures to this day. It was an honour to have him and his family on board.
On Friday and Saturday we were treated to some very emotional sightings of three sperm whales, multiple groups of striped dolphins, and last but not least, our third sighting of Risso’s dolphins this season! The very socially active Risso’s were a group of 6 individuals that left both the participants and the researchers with priceless memories. Just as we thought it couldn’t get any better, we encountered another group of striped dolphins which was the three hundredth sighting of the season! A new record for CSR! This was celebrated on our final night with a delicious homemade tiramisu.

Un commento d'eccezione all'esperienza bordo di "Pelagos" è quello di Massimo Demma, amico di sempre e autore, tra le molte altre cose, del marchio di Tethys, nonché dei più bei disegni di cetacei del Mediterraneo.

Sono stato ospite con la famiglia per due giorni, il 23 e 24 settembre, della comunità di ricerca che vive sulla Pelagos. Due giorni davvero fortunati, per noi che puntavamo tutto su un periodo di tempo così breve: tempo e mare perfetti, tre grandi capodogli soffianti (che non avevo mai visto: dopo averli disegnati per anni grazie alle dettagliate spiegazioni dei Tetidi, finalmente li ho incontrati anch'io!), frequenti gruppi di stenelle con rotanti movimenti privi di attrito e - udite - proprio al crepuscolo del secondo e ultimo giorno, una compagnia di sei grampi impegnati in zompi, zuffe schiumeggianti e ripetute ispezioni sotto la nostra chiglia: le seguivamo grazie al baluginio dei loro graffi argentei, che sott'acqua diventano fantasmatiche forme azzurrine. Mi ritrovo ora nelle condizioni di cui ho letto tante volte in queste pagine: dopo la vista, l'udito, l'emozione e il vento in faccia, mi ritrovo a ripensare e meditare su quanto abbiamo appreso (o solo intravisto) grazie alle spiegazioni e al comportamento del personale scientifico. Tre cose quindi, in definitiva, mi rigiro tra le mani: la meraviglia, la riflessione e la considerazione per queste persone dedite. Perché il fatto è che far funzionare tutto su un barca con sedici persone a bordo (e nutrirle, e accudirle) e al contempo produrre risultati scientifici non è cosa da poco: l'ho visto. L'ho visto perché mi sono incuriosito, se no uno non si accorge di niente: sei lì con ancora negli occhi l'ultima coda di capodoglio che docilmente, fluidamente si leva e si libra e si gira e scende scomparendo lasciando piccoli ghirigori sulla superficie e una chiazza di acqua levigata, lasciando tutti in un silenzio ammirato e rispettoso, quando compare una giovane amazzone con una padella enorme colma di profumati spaghetti con le zucchine "A tavola! è pronto!". Ma quando hanno preparato? E chi, poi, se eran tutte lì, una in alto sulla crocetta che controlla i movimenti del leviatano, due con la macchina fotografica a prua, una con la telecamera, una che come un cane da pastore raduna con garbo i volontari in zone che non intralcino le operazioni… Allora ho cominciato a sorvegliarle, e mi sono reso conto dell'affiatamento perfetto e dell' elusivo, duro lavoro che ha reso la mia permanenza a bordo confortevole, interessante e divertente. Lasciandomi anche la soddisfazione di dare un piccolo contributo alla acquisizione di nuovo sapere provato, oggettivo, in uno sforzo di intelligenza volonterosa.
Sono persone meritevoli: per favore, volontari, trattatemele bene.

"La mia è stata una bellissima esperienza e, nonostante sia stato sorpreso e assolutamente appagato dalla vista dei meravigliosi abitanti dei nostri mari, la cosa che più mi ha colpito è stata la vostra dedizione. Vi ammiro molto. La vosta decisione di fare ciò che fate è assolutamente encomiabile e personalmente avrete la mia amicizia e sostegno per sempre. Io penso che gli uomini si distinguano in base al loro livello e capacità di prendersi responsabilità di aree della propria vita; alcuni si occupano di sé stessi, altri della propria famiglia (e sono spesso considerati già abili), alcuni altri si occupano di altre persone. Poi ce ne sono altre che vedono e comprendono che il futuro dell'intera razza umana non può essere disconnesso dal fatto che esista un pianeta sul quale vivere, che ci siano ambienti ed altre forme di vita di cui prendersi cura; questi sono giganti fra i propri simili, è gente come voi. A new bottlenose dolphin from Australia - Un nuovo tursiope dall'Australia

Until a few years ago, bottlenose dolphins, were considered to belong to only one species, Tursiops truncatus. Then a second species was added to the genus, Tursiops aduncus (Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin), and recently one more new species was described as Tursiops australis, the Burrunan dolphin, which is endemic to a small region of southern Australia.

ITA Fino a pochi anni fa i tursiopi, diffusi praticamente in tutte le acque, si consideravano appartenenti ad una unica specie (Tursiops truncatus). Poi si è distinta una seconda, Tursiops aduncuns (tursiope indo-pacifico), ed ora una terza specie si è aggiunta: il Tursiops australis (tursiope di Burrunan) endemico dell'Australia del Sud, descritto in un lavoro scientifico pubblicato (in inglese) da Plos One.

CSR_18, September, 12th- 18th

What a week! The excellent weather with flat sea and beautiful sunshine allowed us to spend the whole week out at sea. The participants came from all around the world, including the UK, Germany, USA and Mexico, and helped the Pelagos’ crew to sight many cetaceans, of which Striped dolphins everyday, and lots of other marine life. Our first day was marked by a rare sighting of Cuvier’s beaked whales at sunset, our third of the season! We spent that night at sea, in order to wake up early and continue surveying the pelagic area. Five Sperm whales were sighted over the next few days, three of which were identified as "Tom", "Fede" and "Matt". One of these consisted of an exceptional sighting 7nm from the coast, during which a sperm whale surfaced within a hundred meters of a fin whale!! We were also lucky enough to spend two nights anchored in french bays, the islands of Lérins and the bay of Saint Jean, before finally returning to Sanremo to celebrate an amazing week.
We also had the pleasure of having our sponsor, Breach, on board, and both the researchers and participants had the opportunity to model some of the clothing from the new collection, the pictures of which will appear on the spring-summer catalogue 2012.

Our seventeenth week in the Pelagos Sanctuary was renamed the ‘sperm whale week’ following two very intense first days of sperm whale sightings. Despite the initial difficult weather conditions, our hydrophone allowed us to acoustically detect clicks from three sperm whales, which we followed assiduously until all the necessary data were collected. One of these whales was identified as "Enrico"! In the second half of the week we headed towards the eastern part of the Sanctuary, but we didn’t sight any cetaceans. Nevertheless the ever cheerful participants and crew celebrated our 250th sighting of the season, moored next to the beautiful island of Gallinara.

Presentato oggi presso la sede dell'Ente Parco Migliarino San Rossore a Pisa, nell'ambito della manifestazione "Parchi Scritti", il volume sulle Aree Marine Protette edito da ETS nel quale è inserito anche un capitolo sul Santuario dei cetacei a firma di Claudia Fachinetti, collaboratrice, tra l'altro, di Tethys.

La pubblicazione si inserisce all’interno della collana “Le aree naturali protette” coordinata da Renzo Moschini, uno dei più autorevoli esperti di politiche e normative sui parchi in Italia.
Il volume porta scritti di docenti universitari, operatori del mondo della ricerca, direttori e responsabili di AMP, dirigenti e funzionari regionali e ministeriali, esperti delle associazioni di protezione ambientale e di categoria, nazionali e internazionali, giornalisti e rappresentanti del mondo imprenditoriale legato a tali tematiche. Una moltitudine di opinioni e di punti di vista che, nello spirito dell’intera collana editoriale, non può che arricchire le conoscenze, l’informazione e il dibattito su un mondo, quello delle aree protette, e le AMP in particolare, solitamente ignorato dalla pubblicistica.
Nonostante nel contesto internazionale si cerchi di avviare una gestione delle aree marine sempre più attenta e ragionata, attraverso la loro protezione, coscienti di come la disponibilità dell’acqua per tutti e la tutela dei mari sul pianeta, siano le emergenze del nuovo millennio, in Italia il tema dell’inquinamento delle acque e della conservazione della biodiversità marina resta un argomento marginale nel dibattito collettivo. Per la precisione oggi l’intero sistema delle aree protette italiane, e soprattutto quelle marine, si trovano in grave difficoltà dovuta alla crisi economica e ai conseguenti tagli ma anche a una profonda crisi culturale causata dalla sottovalutazione e dalla banalizzazione del loro importante ruolo e dal conseguente progressivo disinteresse istituzionale.
Dopo un “quadro generale” sulla situazione, storia e classificazione delle AMP il volume approfondisce i temi della “gestione”, “pianificazione e valutazione” e dell’integrazione mare-costa per poi puntualizzare su alcune “questioni di risolvere” tra cui il caso del Santuario dei cetacei (che non è considerata una vera AMP) che ha grandi potenzialità e altrettante lacune gestionali. La pubblicazione si conclude con una visione più ampia inserendo le AMP italiane nelle reti mediterranee e non solo.

Cosa vogliono i capodogli

Pochi giorni fa abbiamo segnalato una nuova pubblicazione scientifica sui capodogli del Mediterraneo, con primo autore Enrico Pirotta, collaboratore di Tethys. Il quale ci racconta più in dettaglio di cosa si tratta, in italiano.

La popolazione di capodogli del Mediterraneo è riconosciuta come in pericolo di estinzione dall'IUCN, ma le informazioni a disposizione continuano ad essere limitate. In particolare, non è ancora chiaro quali siano i meccanismi che influenzano la distribuzione e l'uso dell'habitat da parte di questi animali nel bacino.
Nel mondo, la specie presenta una peculiare struttura sociale: quando raggiungono la maturità sessuale, i maschi lasciano i gruppi sociali di femmine e piccoli; inizialmente si uniscono ad altri giovani, per poi diventare sempre più solitari con l'età. Inoltre, mentre le femmine con i piccoli restano a latitudini più basse, i maschi generalmente si spostano verso i poli per alimentarsi, unendosi ai gruppi sociali solo per la riproduzione. Questo schema sembra ripetersi anche in alcune regioni del Mediterraneo.
Con il lavoro recentemente pubblicato su Marine Ecology Progress Series abbiamo cercato di elaborare una metodologia di analisi statistica che consentisse di trarre il massimo dell'informazione dai limitati dati disponibili su questa popolazione e l'abbiamo quindi applicata all'investigazione dei fattori che guidano la scelta dell'habitat dei capodogli nelle acque intorno all'arcipelago delle Baleari. Quest'area è particolarmente interessante perché si tratta di una delle poche nel Mediterraneo in cui vengono regolarmente avvistati gruppi sociali con piccoli.
Dalla nostra analisi è emerso che qui la presenza dei capodogli è associata alle caratteristiche del fondale e, specificamente, alla profondità e all'orientamento della scarpata continentale; quest'ultimo, in sinergia con il sistema di correnti locali, potrebbe influenzare i meccanismi di rimescolamento delle masse d'acqua e, in ultima analisi, la disponibilità e abbondanza di cibo. Inoltre, abbiamo rilevato un differente uso dell'habitat da parte dei gruppi sociali rispetto ai maschi adulti singoli. Una possibile spiegazione di questo risultato potrebbe stare nelle diverse esigenze ecologiche che i gruppi con piccoli hanno rispetto ai maschi. La presenza dei piccoli o il coinvolgimento in altre attività (oltre all'alimentazione), quali la socializzazione, potrebbero far sì che i gruppi scelgano aree diverse rispetto ai maschi. In alternativa, i maschi potrebbero essere esclusi dalle aree migliori dalla competizione con i gruppi di femmine. Questo sembra supportato dalla relazione che abbiamo rilevato con la temperatura dell'acqua: mentre i gruppi prediligono acque più fredde, che si crede corrispondere ad una maggiore disponibilità dei cefalopodi di cui la specie si ciba, i maschi presentano una relazione opposta con questo parametro. L'idea di una forte specializzazione delle femmine per il loro habitat e di una conseguente esclusione dei maschi dalle aree migliori per l'alimentazione è stata già proposta da altri studi e suggerirebbe un affascinante meccanismo attraverso cui si sarebbe evoluta la struttura sociale di questa specie.
La metodologia sviluppata in questo lavoro costituisce uno strumento utile a far luce su alcuni aspetti ancora poco chiari della biologia ed ecologia della popolazione mediterranea di capodoglio, con la speranza che questo contribuisca alla sua conservazione.

It is the end of August and perhaps we should start thinking about the fact that some days of bad weather can slow down a bit the research in the Ligurian Sea. Of course, when stuck in the harbour, it's frustrating as we know that there are dolphins and whales out there and that we happened to see them just the day before, but as Sir John Lubbock once said, “Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky is by no means a waste of time”. In fact, despite a couple days of strong NW wind holding back the Pelagos R/V in the harbour, life on board wasn't bad at all. The crew was just wonderful and it was incredible to see how people of such different ages could interact, and share emotions, just thanks to their passion for the sea and for cetaceans. During the days spent out at sea, at first a pod of bottlenose dolphins with a tiny small newborn awkwardly mimicking the mother swimming at the surface, then three sightings of sperm whales and several sightings of striped dolphins accompanied the crew during the navigation. Life on board went smoothly and people were happy. So, just another great week went by in the Pelagos Sanctuary.

Un sentito grazie a tutto lo Staff di Tethys che mi ha fatto passare una esperienza veramente esaltante, esperienza che proponendo conoscenze scientifiche (grazie Nino, Eva, Ale,Claudio!), marinaresche culturali e ludiche (grazie Roberto!), ha unito persone di provenienze diverse ma tutte accomunate da questo interesse per creature marine affascinanti e, per me, sconosciute. Mi ritengo privilegiato perché le competenze e le capacità dello staff mi hanno reso partecipe di un progetto di grande importanza di cui conserverò soprattutto la passione trasmessaci dai ricercatori. La simpatia che si è creata fra i partecipanti ha senza dubbio contribuito a rendere molto gradevole la settimana, ma le attenzioni che ci ha riservato Tethys l’ha resa speciale. What sperm whales prefer

Sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus habitat preferences are still poorly understood in the Mediterranean, despite the population being classified as ‘endangered’ by the IUCN. In a new paper authored by Tethys' collaborator Enrico Pirotta, a technique, making use of multiple data sources, helped to shed light on sperm whale habitat preference in such a critical area. The results suggest that sperm whales do not use the region uniformly and that topography plays a key role in shaping their distribution. Moreover, solitary individuals were found to use the habitat differently from groups. This segregation appeared to be driven by water temperature and might reflect different needs or intraspecific competition.

I tursiopi "grati" a Torre del Cerrano

L'Area Marina Protetta di Torre del Cerrano, in provincia di Teramo, esulta alla segnalazione, pochi giorni fa, di un gruppo di delfini; si tratta solo dell'ultimo in ordine di tempo di una serie di avvistamenti di tursiopi (Tursiops truncatus), la specie tipica dell'Adriatico. La buona notizia è tanto più confortante in quanto è probabilmente legata a provvedimenti presi di recente, come la sospensione della pesca a strascico e la regolamentazione delle attività nautiche a motore nella zona. This is an important result: the PSSA of Bonifacio is the first one to be established in the Mediterranean Sea and the second in the world for an international strait.

Un incontro inaspettato

Le vacanze sono quasi finite. Sono due settimane che giro con la mia famiglia in gommone nelle acque tra Kalamos, Itaca, Cefalonia e Zante. Stamattina partiamo da Atoko, un'imponente isola conica che si staglia maestosa in mezzo al mare, tra Itaca e Kastos. Non ho ancora incontrato delfini, a parte una stenella, incrociata apparentemente per caso sulla via di ritorno da Zante in mezzo alle onde che frangevano contro la prua della nostra barca. Il mare oggi è piatto: quella calma surreale, resa ovattata dalla foschia mattutina, che contraddistingue quasi tutte le prime ore delle giornate estive di questa zona.

Oggi sono a caccia di delfini. Non posso tornare a casa senza la mia dose annuale, dato che ormai li vedo solo in vacanza. L'anno scorso avvistammo un gruppo di tursiopi, vecchie conoscenze del progetto, a dir poco spettacolari per i loro salti e la curiosità che mostravano per il nostro gommone. Molto diversi come atteggiamento da quelli che mi ricordavo, generalmente restii a farsi avvicinare, perennemente intenti a cercare cibo nella colonna d'acqua, visibili solo quando venivano in superficie per ragioni fisiologiche.

Oggi ho proprio voglia di un incontro del genere, e strizzo gli occhi, in piedi a prua, per poter riconoscere anche il minimo segno che possa indicarmi la presenza di qualche animale. Il mare non sembra così tristemente deserto come negli ultimi anni. Ci sono banchi di pesce che saltano in giro e vedo un pesce spada che rincorre forse delle acciughe in superficie, scivolando via sotto il gommone. L'altro giorno ho visto anche quattro tonni cacciare le loro prede, parassitati dalle immancabili berte. Penso che sia la giornata giusta per vedere delfini.

E poi, tutto a un tratto, eccole in lontananza: due piccole pinne nere, seguite dalla sagoma arrotondata del dorso. Sembrano piccoli per essere tursiopi .... ma non è possibile. Non ci posso credere. Pragmaticamente, anzi .... ammetto - vergogna per uno scienziato! - quasi scaramanticamente, mi avvicino senza preconcetti. E invece sono proprio loro. Il mio è un urlo di entusiasmo, gioia allo stato puro: sono delfini comuni! E sono tanti, tredici in tutto. E sono accompagnati dai piccoli, tre di cui uno neonato. E un paio di

giovani. È un bellissimo gruppo di femmine con pargoli che, con aria indolente, nuota a zig-zag tra Kalamos e Meganisi.

Da quanto tempo non li vedo? Faccio due calcoli veloci e realizzo con orrore che sono dieci anni esatti. L'ultima volta ero incinta all'ottavo mese e raccoglievamo frammenti di tessuto dalla pelle di animali identificati per le analisi genetiche. Quella era stata l'ultima volta in cui li avevo visti. Poi ho lasciato il lavoro di campo per motivi famigliari e, mentre gli anni passavano, leggevo con tristezza i dati raccolti dai miei colleghi che, con scientifica e fredda lucidità, mostravano il declino lento e inesorabile di questa popolazione locale, una volta così florida e ora invece rappresentata da pochi e sparuti esemplari.

Negli anni, girando con i miei figli in queste acque impoverite da una pesca dissennata spesso condotta con metodi illegali, senza riuscire a vedere la sagoma inconfondibile di un delfino comune, pensavo a quando nel lontano 1991 avvistammo per la prima volta questi animali dalla tuga del De Gomera (la barca a vela usata nei primi anni). Un gruppo immenso di una quarantina di individui che nuotavano velocissimi facendo porpoising tra Lefkas e Meganisi, uno stretto canale letteralmente infestato da barche a vela e motore, molto più simile a uno scorcio del basso Lario piuttosto che ai noti panorami ellenici.

Erano così tanti che inizialmente avevo creduto fossero stenelle (ma che ci facevano in acque così costiere?), e la mia sorpresa raggiunse il suo apice quando invece realizzai che erano delfini comuni, una specie che già a quei tempi era considerata una rarità in tutte le acque italiane.

Per anni la situazione non era cambiata. Noi eravamo passati da una barca a vela a un più pratico gommone con una base di ricerca situata esattamente al centro della nostra area di studio, a Episkopi sull'isola di Kalamos. I gruppi di comuni continuavano a essere numerosi, almeno fino al 96-97. La loro presenza era costante, regolare e prevedibile. Li vedevamo da casa, dal porto; persino quando a piedi andavamo a riempire le taniche di benzina (sì, a quei tempi avevamo pochi soldi, un gommone a dir poco ridicolo e la nostra ricerca era costellata da svariati intermezzi in puro stile "lavori forzati").

I delfini comuni erano la nostra certezza, il nostro orgoglio di ricercatori. Ci rendevamo conto di avere a che fare con, probabilmente, l'unica comunità numerosa di questa specie rimasta nel Mediterraneo centrale. Ci sentivamo caricati della responsabilità di studiarli a fondo per capire, attraverso loro, quali fossero state le cause del declino della specie in altre zone del Mediterraneo, affinchė in futuro altre perdite simili non si verificassero nuovamente.

Dopo il 97, pur vedendoli continuamente (quasi tutti i giorni), i gruppi hanno cominciato ad essere meno numerosi. Inizialmente credo che nessuno di noi avesse realizzato veramente l'entità del processo ormai in atto. Immaginavamo che sì, probabilmente, c'era un po' meno pesce, ma loro erano sempre lì, così come altri predatori che si nutrono delle loro stesse prede, tonni e pesci spada. In un certo senso noi, che passavamo anche otto ore consecutive sotto il sole greco a registrarne movimenti, comportamento e identità, eravamo quasi contenti di dover fotoidentificare "solo" sei-dieci delfini per volta invece che una massa incontrollabile di 20-30 animali apparentemente impegnati a giocare a nascondino!

E invece qualcosa stava accadendo davanti ai nostri occhi. Gli anni passavano e capitava sempre più spesso di vedere scorrere i giorni senza neanche un avvistamento di comuni. Nel frattempo, come ho detto, io avevo lasciato il lavoro di campo e seguivo al computer, attraverso colonne interminabili di numeri, il piccolo (grande?) dramma che si stava svolgendo in quel poligono delimitato dalle isole ioniche. Ormai anche qui i delfini comuni erano diventati una rarità, come accaduto in Italia cinquant'anni prima. Dei 150 noti che abitavano regolarmente la zona, negli utlimi anni riuscivamo a registrarne solo una decina, durante soltanto due o tre avvistamenti nei quattro mesi estivi. Il mare lentamente diventava un deserto desolato. Terminati anche gli avvistamenti di tonni, di pesci spada, di banchi di acciughe, palamite e ricciole.

Per più di un anno i miei colleghi hanno monitorato i principali porti di pescherecci della zona. Con una pazienza certosina hanno controllato ogni mese quanto pesce veniva scaricato dalle barche, quantificandolo in tonnellate pescate all'anno. I risultati del loro lavoro hanno dell'incredibile. A causa di soli 21 grossi pesherecci (rappresentano il 7% dell’intera flotta di pescherecci e sbarcano il 55% della biomassa totale pescata), l'intera zona è stata letterlamente depredata per anni di acciughe e sardine, le prede principali di delfini comuni, tonni e pesci spada. In pratica, anno dopo anno, queste barche hanno prelevato tutto (o quasi tutto) poteva produrre quella zona in termini di pesce, lasciando solo qualche "briciola" agli altri abitanti del mare.

Le conseguenze sono ovvie. I delfini hanno semplicemente smesso di stare lì, e si sono dispersi su aree maggiori, cercando il cibo sempre più spesso da altre parti. Tralasciando le implicazioni eco-biologiche (cosa può succedere a degli animali spiccatamente sociali, per i quali la coesione di gruppo è necessaria quanto il cibo di cui si nutrono, nel momento in cui sono costretti a disperdersi, disaggregarsi e quindi diminuire in termini di qualità e quantità le loro relazioni, e in ultima analisi la possibilità di accoppiarsi?), il risultato è stato deprimente. Navigare in queste acque sembra di passare per quelle campagne inaridite dal passaggio della civiltà urbana e industriale. La biodiversità si è drasticamente ridotta a poche e persistenti specie marine che si ingrassano grazie ai mangimi e nutrienti riversati giornalmente dai sempre più numerosi allevamenti di pesce.

Tornando alla calda giornata di oggi è quindi comprensibile il mio entusiasmo, quasi puerile, nell'aver visto un gruppo così numeroso di delfini comuni. Quest'estate Joan (Gonzalvo, attuale responsabile dell’Ionian Dolphin Project) aveva avvistato i comuni solo una volta, a giugno, ed erano tre animali. Oggi ce ne sono di più e ci sono i piccoli. Non sono per niente socievoli (è vero, ci sono mamme attente e preoccupate per la loro prole, che costantemente mi tengono alla larga), non sembra stiano mangiando, bensì riposando. Non vengono a prua a fare bow-riding o scouting. Anche i giovani, generalmente i più impavidi, mantengono le distanze dalla nostra barca. Quando passa un motoscafo, il wave-riding che fanno nelle onde della scia sembra vagamente stanco e pigro.

Ma tutto sommato loro sono qui. E c'è del pesce in giro. E ci sono altri predatori. E la speranza che un giorno queste meravigliose creature - quasi degli amici visto che ciascuno ha un nome, Pepe, Dafne, Nigel, Max, e una data per ogni incontro - possano tornare a ripopolare i mari della Grecia Ionica, a stupirci con i loro comportamenti affascinanti, questa speranza oggi è un po' più viva di prima. La strada per mettere in atto efficacemente le misure di conservazione che da anni Tethys e altri colleghi testardamente promuovono è sicuramente ancora lunga. Basterebbe poco per dare la possibilità a questi delfini di riprendersi ai livelli di una volta. Però parlando in giro con giovani greci, ho avuto l’impressione che il futuro possa regalarci quella speranza che alla fine è veramente dura a morire.

P.S. Il giorno dopo l'incontro con i comuni, poche miglia più a sud abbiamo incontrato un gruppo di nove stenelle. Stenelle che Joan aveva visto anche dieci giorni prima nella stessa zona. Due giorni dopo Joan mi ha riferito che sempre in quella zona ha rivisto i comuni. Questa volta erano 15: gli stessi individui che avevo incontrato più alcuni altri. Che tutto questo sia veramente un segnale di ripresa dell’ ecosistema marino costiero in Grecia Ionica?

If in five days at sea you happen to meet five of the six species of cetaceans that are regularly observed in the Pelagos Sanctuary, you can just consider yourself really lucky. If, then, you also think of a group of six Cuvier's beaked whales at the surface, followed by two fin whales and one hundred long-finned pilot whales at sunset, it becomes very difficult to express the emotions that the 15th week of research has gifted the crew on board the Pelagos R/V with. The usual striped dolphins have accompanied the crew all during the voyage and two sperm whales, "Benno" and "Fede", old Tethys friends, have been tracked and observed resting at the surface. What else to add to such a wonderful week?

What a week in the Pelagos Sanctuary! Let’s start from the mere numbers: 5 days spent out at sea, 650 km travelled, 82 hours spent searching the animals and a total of 27 sightings recorded. But even if, as Nathanael West said, “numbers constitute the only universal language”, they can not express at all the uniqueness of the 14th week spend on board of the Pelagos R/V. We travelled all the way back and forth to Corsica Island, spend some time in the amazing bays of Calvi and Girolata and admired the brightness of the milky way during the night navigation. A pod of 5 sperm whales engaging in social surface activity gave us the best “Welcome to Corsica” we could ever expect; two pods of long-finned pilot whales, hundreds of striped dolphins and, finally, fin whales accompanied us during the crossing of the Ligurian Sea. Last but not least, a pod of bottlenose dolphins with a small newborn was just waiting for us a few meters out of the port of Sanremo. Then loggerhead turtles, giant devil ray fishes, a blue shark and finally a swim with an ocean sun fish.
After such a great and unique experience there isn’t that much left to say and we certainly agree with T.T. Williams who said “To be whole. To be complete. Wildness reminds us what it means to be human, what we are connected to rather than what we are separate from".

CSR_13 (August, 8th - 14th)

The 13th week in the Ligurian Sea did not take off like a rocket. In fact, despite the good weather and sea conditions, the recorded sightings where quite scant, making the crew of the R/V Pelagos to think that even whales and dolphins were on vacation. But finally the last day a pod of Risso’s dolphins where spotted just a few miles south-west of Sanremo. The 8 animals, 5 adults, 2 juveniles and 1 calf accompanied the ship for more than one hour, till some sperm whales’ clicks were acoustically detected on the hydrophone. The animal was tracked during two diving cycles and showed a quite unusual behaviour, prizing the researchers and participants with a series of 27 3+1 codas. Almost at the sunset a second sperm whale was observed while resting at the surface just a few meters from the research platform.
The sea has always big surprises in store, to delight the eyes of the people willing to wait and able to observe; this recalls what R. W. Emerson once said about the sea: “The sea, washing the equator and the poles, offers its perilous aid, and the power and empire that follow it... Beware of me, it says, but if you can hold me, I am the key to all the lands.''

The 12th week on board the R/V "Pelagos" started with a bang! An incredible sighting of five fin whales gathering in the late afternoon to feed. The change of the respiration pattern and diving time of these gigantic animals were evident to all the crew who respectfully admired the five whales gently breaking the water surface with their powerful blows. The usual striped dolphins with an unusual high number of calves and some newborns were fellow travellers all during the week along with a couple of nice loggerhead turtles and a giant devil ray fish. Despite the unpredictability of the sea condition, once mirror flat and once rough and wavy, a total of 55 hours were spent out at sea resulting in 310 nautical miles travelled and 25 recorded sightings.

Petizione contro il "finning" degli squali. Sign the petition against shark finning

Per anni i responsabili della pesca dell'UE e i membri del Parlamento Europeo hanno discusso, assieme a Shark Alliance, della necessità di garantire una maggiore protezione degli squali. Mentre le politiche di prevenzione e riduzione della pesca eccessiva agli squali stanno gradualmente progredendo, il debole Regolamento dell'UE che vieta l'inutile pratica del "finning" (che consiste nel tagliare le pinne dello squalo gettandone il resto in mare) deve ancora essere modificato. Ora si è giunti alle battute finali del dibattito sul finning, ma è necessario — ora più che mai — far pressione sui politici perché proteggano gli squali, una volta per tutte. La petizione di Shark Alliance può essere firmata on line. Il testo è disponibile in diverse lingue, tra cui l'italiano.

For years, European Union (EU) fisheries and environment officials, and members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have been discussing, together with the Shark Alliance, the need to better protect sharks. While safeguards to prevent shark overfishing are evolving gradually, the flawed EU regulation that bans the wasteful practice of ‘finning’ (slicing off a shark’s fins and discarding the body at sea) has yet to be amended. At long last, we are in the final stages of the crucial finning debate; in a petition launched a few days ago, European citizens are calling on EU fisheries ministers to make the push and protect sharks from overexploitation and to urgently strengthen the EU regulation that bans the wasteful practice of ‘finning'. The petition, which is available in different languages, can be signed on line.

Bryant Austin is fine art photographer who builds relationships with individual whales which allows him to compose high resolution life-size photographs of his subjects. His work is entirely dependent upon whales who initiate close inspections of him less than two meters away. When these rare and exceptional encounters occur the artist composes a series of vertically oriented photographs along the whale’s body later to be made into a life size composite photograph.

Less fin whales, more striped dolphins in the Pelagos Sanctuary

A new scientific paper was just published by Tethys' vice President Simone Panigada.

Panigada S, Lauriano G, Burt L, Pierantonio N, Donovan G (2011) Monitoring Winter and Summer Abundance of Cetaceans in the Pelagos Sanctuary (Northwestern Mediterranean Sea) Through Aerial Surveys. PLoS ONE 6(7): e22878. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0022878

Systematic long-term monitoring of abundance is essential to inform conservation measures and evaluate their effectiveness. To instigate such work in the Pelagos Sanctuary in the Mediterranean, two aerial surveys were conducted in winter and summer 2009. A total of 467 (131 in winter, 336 in summer) sightings of 7 species was made. Sample sizes were sufficient to estimate abundance of fin whales in summer (148; 95% CI = 87–254) and striped dolphins in winter (19,462; 95% CI = 12 939–29 273) and in summer (38 488; 95% CI = 27 447–53 968). Numbers of animals within the Sanctuary are significantly higher in summer, when human activities and thus potential population level impacts are highest. Comparisons with data from past shipboard surveys suggest an appreciable decrease in fin whales within the Sanctuary area and an appreciable increase in striped dolphins. Aerial surveys proved to be more efficient than ship surveys, allowing more robust estimates, with smaller CIs and CVs. These results provide essential baseline data for this marine protected area and continued regular surveys will allow the effectiveness of the MPA in terms of cetacean conservation to be evaluated and inform future management measures. The collected data may also be crucial in assessing whether ship strikes, one of the main causes of death for fin whales in the Mediterranean, are affecting the Mediterranean population.

Participants of CSR 11 experienced one of the most exciting sightings of the season: the first group of long-finned pilot whales! We spent about two hours with them, collecting data, listening to their vocalizations and enjoying the curious attitudes of the calf and the two juveniles of the group. Volunteers also had the opportunity to listen to the voices of two sperm whales, to track the animals and finally to meet them.
During the days spent in the harbour they have been able to visit the oceanographic museum of Monaco, to experience a different way to enjoy cetaceans onboard the whale watching boat Corsara, and to learn more about these animals through lectures and videos.
CSR 11 people shared the emotions but also the difficulties of life onboard, and it was a great pleasure to have such a nice group of persons with us.

A South American dolphin, the Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) may be able to sense prey by their electric fields, the same way as sharks and rays do. According to scientist, this is the first known case of a mammal showing this ability. When CSR 10 started the weather forecast for the week seemed it was not going to give us many opportunities to go in search for animals, but finally participants could enjoy two long sightings of sperm whales and many encounters with sea life. Even the hours spent in the harbour didn’t affect the mood of people onboard, who could learn more about cetaceans through lectures and a visit to the oceanographic museum of Monaco, and also take part in the data analysis doing the matching and the editing of the pictures of sperm whale and Risso’s dolphins. The great food prepared by Sabina, the director of the project who re-invented herself as cook for the week, gave also a great contribution. Participants of CSR 10 will take home some striped dolphins sightings, an encounter with a turtle, a Mediterranean manta ray jump, two well known Sperm whales, Matt and Albert, and the emotion of swimming in the deep blue.

Oceani "privatizzati" dalla Commissione Europea?

L'obiettivo di attuare una radicale riforma della pesca recuperando le risorse ittiche in quattro anni, presentato dalla Commissione europea, rischia di naufragare, secondo quanto denuncia in un comunicato stampa Ocean 2012. Infatti la proposta della Commissione, pubblicata il 13 luglio scorso a Bruxelles, impone agli Stati membri l’adozione di concessioni di pesca trasferibili: agli operatori verrebbe concessa la possibilità di scambiare sul mercato la loro quota di pesca, sistema che la Commissione promuove con l'intenzione di ridurre il numero dei pescherecci, ma senza distinzione fra chi pesca in maniera sostenibile e chi utilizza pratiche ed attrezzi devastanti per l’ambiente e le risorse. Questo meccanismo andrebbe a scapito della piccola pesca artigianale, senza fare alcuna differenza tra metodi di pesca sostenibili e insostenibili e senza risolvere il problema della pesca eccessiva.
Per ridurre davvero lo sforzo di pesca e adeguarlo alle risorse rimaste nei nostri mari – denunciano ancora le associazioni - è necessario un programma con misure e scadenze dettagliate, e non puntare tutto su una virtuale privatizzazione degli oceani .

The non collaborative weather did not stop us from having an ace time with the people of the 9th CSR cruise.
The rough sea seemed to make striped dolphins particularly lively and playful. We sighted several large groups that followed us for miles, bow-riding, performing aerial displays and surfing the waves.
On the other hand, the encounters with sperm whales gave us the chance of experiencing two of the most serious threats to cetaceans in the Med: collisions and noise pollution. The first whale had a massive scar resulting from the collision with a boat. It was an individual that we have met several times during this season as well as last season, and all the crew wondered how its swimming behaviour could be affected by the big bump on its head. Moreover, while we were recording the animal, a cargo ship crossed the area and allowed everyone to witness firsthand how these loud vessels can completely mask echolocation sounds thus interfering with the sperm whale’s ability to search for food.
During our time in the harbour, in-between lectures, delicious meals, games and just relaxing altogether, the people onboard opened interesting debates about many issues that affect our seas, making the week even more stimulating and enjoyable.

Whales and dolphins can serve as charismatic flagship species and as indicator species; that's why marine mammal protected areas are needed in the Mediterranean. At the moment there are three in Turkey, one in Italy - and the Pelagos Sanctuary lying mainly on the high seas, established by a treaty among France, Italy and Monaco.
What are the challenges faced by the Pelagos Sanctuary and what is the take-home lesson we got from it? Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara, founder and president of the Tethys Research Institute, who has been active in proposing the creation of the Sanctuary, is now pushing for improvement of its management.

To assess cetacean densities in the Pelagos Sanctuary for Mediterranean Marine Mammals a survey was carried out in the Ligurian-Provencal Basin (NW Mediterranean) in August 2008. An area of 58,000 km2 was surveyed in eight days with equally spaced zigzag transects, covering 1,255 km in favourable conditions. Fifty three sightings of four cetacean species were made: striped dolphins (n = 37), fin whales (n = 12), sperm whales (n = 3) and Cuvier’s beaked whales (n = 1). Estimates of abundance were obtained using Distance 5.0.
The estimated dolphin abundance was 13,232 (CV = 35.55; 95% CI = 6,640–26,368), with a density of 0.23 individuals/km (CV = 35.55; 95% CI = 0.11–0.45). No fin whale abundance estimate was possible due to the small sample size. The point estimate of the 2008 striped dolphin abundance estimate was almost half of that of a survey conducted in 1992 by Forcada and colleagues (1995) in the same area with comparable effort, platform and methodology (25,614; CV = 25.3; 95% CI = 15,377–42,658); nevertheless, the difference was not statistically significant. These results strongly support the need for further systematic monitoring in the Sanctuary and in the surrounding areas, in order to assess striped dolphin abundance, spatial and temporal trends.

Ne emerge una stima di abbondanza delle stenelle presenti nel Santuario Pelagos: nel 2008 il loro numero sembrerebbe pressoché dimezzato rispetto a un survey paragonabile compiuto nel 1992. A nice new video shows the work carried out by Tethys Research Institute on dolphin conservation in western Greece.
The team is working to identify the main threats that these amazing creatures are facing. With the help of Earthwatch volunteers researchers will be able to provide data to support conservation-oriented management actions.

CSR_08 (July, 4th-10th)

Despite the tricky weather conditions, the crew of the 8th CSR cruise made some very interesting encounters with cetaceans and other marine life during the week onboard Pelagos. Several striped dolphins, turtles, shearwaters, tuna fish, a sun fish and a manta ray were sighted in the first days, but we did not have to wait long for the big guys to show up. While acoustically tracking a sperm whale, we spotted the blow of a fin whale feeding nearby. After collecting the relevant data, we went back to the odontocete, which was recognized as an old friend called Bios thanks to the matching with our catalogue. The day after, three more fin whales were sighted in the pelagic area, again showing a typical feeding behaviour. The wind was blowing strong on the way back to Sanremo and it prevented us from going out on the following day. Nevertheless we had the chance for an interesting trip to the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco. We were lucky to have onboard Margherita, telling us about the results of over 20 years of research on the Mediterranean fin whale.

Is dolphin meat good for sharks?

No, it isn't, according to parasitologists. Clistobothrium carcharodoni is a tiny little tapeworm which can be found in great white sharks. A scientists from Otago University showed that it's larvae are found in dolphin meat

"I could not resist coming back..." CSR-07 (June 27th - July 3rd)

When my three weeks aboard Pelagos finished two weeks ago, I thought that I would not be back until next summer. Well, I was wrong. I was still in the area and could not resist coming back to the boat. This completes my fourth week on board this summer, and my sixth week over the course of two summers. The atmosphere during this program is unlike any other I have encountered. Once on the boat you will meet genuinely kind volunteers and researchers from around the world who all join together by their passion for cetaceans, the environment, and life in general. The researchers are happy to share their vast knowledge about marine mammals with you, the participants are eager to exchange their culture, and seeing the cetaceans in their natural habitat is truly magical. Everyone on board becomes a family, and the relationships built in only a week last for years. Tethys has put together an unforgettable experience and offers this opportunity to anyone and everyone. This marks the end of my fifth week across two summers aboard Pelagos. I had such an amazing experience last year, so I had my expectations set rather high. But, I have to say that these last three weeks have far exceeded my expectations. Amazing sightings filled with fin whales, sperm whales, jumping manta rays, thrashing swordfish, Risso’s dolphins, and we were even lucky enough to observe a fin whale and a sperm whale breach! Seeing the cetaceans was amazing, but building friendships with the people on board was just as rewarding. I was extremely fortunate to have such a great crew each week. All of the principal investigators, research assistants, and participants were so much fun to be around. Thank you to everyone for another unforgettable summer ☺

CSR-05 (June, 13th - 19th)

What an amazing week! The weather in the first part of the week was absolutely perfect, we spent one night and two days at sea in the pelagic area and were able to sight many different fin whales, including a mother and calf pair and a lonely juvenile, striped dolphins, one sperm whale, a turtle and a blue shark. On Thursday, when we thought the week could not go better than that, we sighted a group of Risso’s dolphins together with a Sperm whale. The two species were interacting with each other making us witnesses of a very rare event. The rough sea on Friday gave the participants an opportunity to visit the Oceanographic Museum of Montecarlo and on Saturday the week ended with one more sighting of Sperm whale and a party onboard our research vessel Pelagos.

"Thank you so much Tethys crew for an unforgettable experience! These past two weeks have been so amazing. At first I was nervous because it had been my first time travelling to Europe and I did not know what was coming in for me but Tethys research has more than exceeded my expectations of the trip. It was absolutely fabulous! I truly believe I made genuine friendships here on the boat and I want to thank the staff for making the environment so comfortable and friendly. The sightings were also amazing, especially because I have never seen cetaceans in the wild before. Oceans changing much faster than expected

An expert panel of scientists brought together by the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO), including coral reef ecologists, toxicologists, and fisheries scientists, concluded that issues such as over-fishing, pollution and climate change are acting together in ways that have not previously been recognised.
"The findings are shocking," said Alex Rogers, IPSO's scientific director and professor of conservation biology at Oxford University. Ocean life is "at high risk of entering a phase of extinction of marine species unprecedented in human history".

C'è una balena? Osservatela senza disturbare: ecco come.

Sarà maggior attenzione, o comunicazione migliore, sarà forse davvero perché gli animali da un po' compaiono in zone inconsuete, sta di fatto che sempre più spesso, in estate, le notizie di avvistamenti di cetacei nei nostri mari si rincorrono. Un incontro con un branco di stenelle o addirittura con le balenottere o i capodogli è un'esperienza meravigliosa che dovrebbe servire a sensibilizzare i fortunati avvistatori occasionali alla causa della tutela dei cetacei e del loro ambiente. Non deve invece trasformarsi in un disturbo per gli animali, come invece a volte può accadere quando gli osservatori in barca - anche beneintenzionati - sono troppi o troppo insistenti.
Ecco quindi le semplici regole di condotta da seguire.
Si considera la zona di "attenzione" un raggio di 300 metri, all'interno del quale bisogna:
- mantenere velocità costante, calibrata sull'individuo più lento e comunque non superiore ai 5 nodi;
- mantenere una traiettoria solo leggermente convergente alla rotta degli animali, fino a diventare parallela, per poi allontanarsi progressivamente (vedi linea tratteggiata verde nello schema);
- evitare cambiamenti repentini di velocità e direzione;
- spegnere ecoscandagli e altri eventuali sonar;
- prestare particolare attenzione e mantenersi a distanza maggiore in caso di presenza di piccoli;
- allontanarsi immediatamente oltre i 300 metri se il comportamento degli animali appare perturbato (per esempio in caso di tentativi di fuga);
- limitarsi a 30 minuti di osservazione;
- se sono presenti più barche, restare all'interno del raggio dei 300 metri solo una alla volta, e solo per 15 minuti;
- evitare la zona in rosso, che è 50 metri per i delfini e 100 per balenottere e capodogli, a meno che non siano gli animali, di loro iniziativa, ad avvicinarsi. In questo caso evitare assolutamente di toccarli o di tentare di avvicinarli nuotando. M.J.

Unusually large gathering of fin whales in British waters

Twenty-one fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) feeding near the surface were spotted between north Cornwall and south west Pembrokeshire - an incredibly rare event in this small area. The unusual sighting could be part of a wider movement of sea creatures around Britain's coast as a result of climate change, researchers said.

Cetacean Sanctuary Research (CSR_03) May 30th - June 5th

The last naturalist campaign of 2011 has just ended a few days ago. All the students from Università degli Studi di Milano left the boat with hundreds of pictures and lovely memories. The weather played tricks on us, and the boat had to stay one day in Sanremo harbour, never the less it was an interesting day dedicated to lessons, and sperm whale photo-identification matching.
"Charles" was already in our catalogue and two new guys were added. During the sperm whale sighting number 8 our focal animal decided to perform an unusual behaviour. While calmly breathing and floating on the surface, he lifted his fluke up vertically while leaving the rest of his body horizontal under the water. Once again the extreme flexibility of these animals’ huge bodies was revealed to us.
Christina, a PhD student at the London University, joined our team after a field season in our Greek project in Amvrakikos.

Balena "boom" in Australia

Le buone notizie nel campo della tutela ambientale sono purtroppo assai rare, quindi a maggior ragione meritano risalto. E' il caso della segnalazione di un record delle presenze di megattere, balenottere minori e azzurre atteso prossimamente al largo delle coste australiane.

CSR-03: a rescue adventure

During our last day at sea we received an unusual call on the boat's radio. On channel 16, the official channel for emergency calls, a boat was sending a SOS. "Balù II" had an engine failure in the middle of the sea and the people on board were no longer able to drive it. The wind was increasing and "Balù" was 15 Nm from the closest harbour. Unfortunately they were in international waters, which means the official rescue procedure was more difficult. "Pelagos", our research vessel, received a direct call from the Coast guard, and we were asked to save them. Immediately our captain Roberto headed in the direction of "Balù" and we prepared the ropes to connect the 2 hulls. So, instead of our usual hydrophone we towed a whole boat.
Everything ran fine, and the operation was a success.
What a joy when the crew of "Balù" came to thank us with a case of white wine, and we discovered that one of the ladies aboard had been a participant of our research project some years ago. It's a small sea!

On June 3rd of we proudly celebrated our 50th sighting of the season. We don’t remember any other season that has started so worthwhile. Until now we saw striped dolphins 42 times, sperm whales 8 times, fin whales 3 times and once bottlenose dolphins and Ziphius. And everything happened in only 12 days at sea.
Let's wait for the sightings yet to come!

Spiaggiato alla Biennale

Piano piano la cultura cetologica si diffonde anche in settori diversi da quello naturalistico, come testimonia il capodoglio comparso all'Arsenale di Venezia in occasione della Biennale d'Arte. E' un'opera del francese Loris Gréaud, "The Geppetto Pavilion". Come spesso nell'immaginario collettivo la "balena" è ancora indissolubilmente legata alla storia di Pinocchio, ma poco male: impossibile non cogliere comunque un grido d'allarme a favore dell'ambiente. La novità è che la riproduzione del cetaceo, in resina, berglass e metallo, non è il solito mostro non meglio specificato, bensì un vero capodoglio quanto a dimensioni, proporzioni e forme, che rende bene l'idea di come sia vederne uno da vicino.
Non così per l'interno, a cui si accede attraverso una botola sulla pancia, e che appare, con tanto di WC, come nella foto a destra. Ma del resto, anche delle esigenze di Geppetto bisognava pur tener conto...

2° settimana europea della pesca 4-12 giugno 2011: testimonianze cercansi sul "ritorno al futuro"

C’era una volta, in Europa, un mare ricco di pesce. C’erano più barche, più pescatori, gli stock ittici erano più sani e le comunità che dipendevano dalla pesca più fiorenti. Oggi, oltre il 70 per cento degli stock europei risulta impoverito dall’uso eccessivo di reti e la pesca artigianale è in grande difficoltà.
Alla vigilia della pubblicazione della proposta di riforma della Politica Comune della Pesca della Commissione Europea, prevista a luglio, e della Giornata Mondiale degli Oceani, l’8 giugno, più di 100 gruppi membri di Ocean2012 coinvolgeranno i cittadini di tutta Europa nella seconda Settimana Europea della Pesca, dal 4 al 12 giugno. Ognuno sarà invitato a mandare contributi con foto, video, testimonianze scritte, per raccontare quanto fosse sano il nostro ambiente marino, quanto la pesca eccessiva lo abbia modificato e come la Politica Comune della Pesca dell’UE possa diventare una concreta opportunità di cura degli oceani con un ritorno al futuro.
Durante la Settimana della Pesca Ocean2012 chiederà ai Ministri dell’UE che la Politica Comune della Pesca dia priorità alla salvaguardia delle risorse ittiche, dando così un futuro delle comunità che dipendono dalla pesca.
Risulta ormai evidente il declino degli stock ittici europei:

1. Fino a pochi decenni fa, la lunghezza media del merluzzo sbarcato nel Mare del Nord era di 1-1.5 metri, e l’età media era di 8-10 anni – oggi la lunghezza media del merluzzo è di 50 centimetri e l’età media è inferiore ai tre anni;
2. Nel 1949 la pesca del tonno rosso nel nord Europa registrava un picco di 5.485 tonnellate di catture annue – oggi, nel nord Europa, la pesca al tonno rosso è scomparsa;
3. Un tempo la flotta olandese comprendeva 700-800 imbarcazioni per la pesca alle aringhe con 11.000-12.000 persone di equipaggio e una cattura annuale di circa 50.000 tonnellate – oggi un solo peschereccio a strascico con 10-11 persone di equipaggio, pesca la stessa quantità di pesce.

Tutte le testimonianze che perverranno nel corso della Settimana della Pesca al sito di OCEAN2012, tutte le storie del mare com’era una volta e delle sue comunità, verranno raccolte e spedite al Ministro dell’Agricoltura Francesco Saverio Romano per dire simbolicamente che è necessario guardare al passato, alle pratiche di pesca rispettose del mare e delle sue risorse, per avere una chance di futuro. Oggi la storia della pesca in Italia è il racconto di reti distruttive e di pratiche spesso illegali, di sovrasfruttamento insensato che rischia di mettere in ginocchio le comunità di pescatori. La riforma della Politica Comune della Pesca può capovolgere tutto questo.
Per tutta la settimana, la campagna Ritorno al futuro, sarà su Repubblica con un quiz salva-oceani, le video-ricette della Sostenibile leggerezza del nostro mare, e una gallery fotografica della memoria.

OCEAN2012 è una coalizione di organizzazioni unite dalla volontà di trasformare la Politica europea della Pesca per fermare il prelievo eccessivo, mettere fine alle pratiche distruttive e conseguire un giusto ed equo utilizzo di stock ittici in buona salute.
In Italia fanno parte della coalizione: CTS Ambiente, Green Life, GRIS, Fondazione Cetacea, Legambiente, Marevivo, MedSharks, Oceanus onlus, Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn di Napoli, Tethys Research Institute

A lesson of taxonomy in the middle of the sea (CSR_2)

While we were navigating a couples of days ago, a peculiar encounter occurred.
What looked like a floating "monster", turned out to be a long thick rope used by fishermen. We recovered it on board, to avoid damages to other boats’ propellers and we started a scanning of the spiral in search for animals. The students on board had fun discovering two species of inhabitants. A crustacean of the Cirriped infraclass, order Lepadomorpha, probably of the genus Lepas.
Than a dozen of multicoloured isopods, peeped off from the rope.
Both the species are typical colonizers of floating objects driven by currents. We released the tiny creatures in the sea and brought the dangerous rope to the harbour.

Cetacean Sanctuary Research (CSR_02), May, 23-29

The CSR cruise number 2 was again characterised by the presence of students from Milano University. They came on board within the context of a naturalistic campaign meant to be their very first field experience. They had the opportunity to live the real life of a researcher, facing long hours under the sun, entering the data collected into the computer, and helping the crew to patrol the sea in search for animals.
They also had the possibility to compare the sperm whale pictures taken during the first two weeks with Tethys catalogue. Of four individuals analyzed, one turned out to be a well known friend, "Gogo".
Four days were spent at sea and an amazing number of sightings occurred. For 21 times we had the occasion to scream "dorsal fin, at 9 o’clock, 400m". or "blow!".
All the marine life appeared to be concentrated in the first bathymetric lines of the map, even sunfish (Mola mola) were seen close to the coast.
A nice guest joined the company flapping around the boat, a small bird, a wood warbler (Phylloscopus sibilatrix), who spent with us a couple of hours "nesting" on Giulia’s head.
Mariana, a brasialian researcher in the field of ecotossicology, who studies franciscana (the cetacean species Pontoporia blainvillei) shared her experience with us this week. Mariana gave us important information about the chemicals pollutants humans release in the sea and their devastating effects on cetaceans and other marine animals.
The spirit was high and the week passed very quickly. We hope this was a good chance for the researchers of tomorrow to have a look inside their future carriers and to make a good choice. In any case it was a pleasure to share time at sea together.

Cetacei a Venezia

Inaugurate il 28 maggio sei nuove sale del ristrutturato Museo di Storia Naturale di Venezia. La famosa città d'arte si arricchisce così anche di una preziosa attrattiva naturalistica. L'impostazione è completamente rinnovata rispetto a un museo tradizionale; le esposizioni non seguono un criterio meramente sistematico né geografico, bensì gli animali e i reperti sono raggruppati secondo una logica degli adattamenti all'ambiente. Un esempio: specie anche molto diverse tra loro mangiano in maniera simile, ed ecco che tartaruga marina e pappagallo hanno inaspettatamente qualcosa che li accomuna, perché entrambi hanno evoluto un becco. In questo modo anche solo la scelta degli accostamenti racconta una storia senza bisogno di lunghi e "faticosi" cartelli esplicativi.
Gli amanti del mare troveranno una bella sala sull'oceano, uno scheletro di capodoglio e uno, nuovo, di balenottera (affiancato da foto e filmati Tethys), tutto calato in allestimenti suggestivi che sfruttano tra l'altro anche dei bei giochi di luci e ombre. M.J.
