Le reti derivanti, tra gli attrezzi da pesca più dannosi e meno selettivi sono state bandite sia dalle Nazioni Unite che dalla Unione Europea. Ciononostante sono utilizzate ancora ampiamente in Mediterraneo, dove l'Italia conta una delle maggiori flotte che usa le sparare o le ferrettare illegalmente. Ora l'UE sembra finalmente correre ai ripari.
