European Parliament votes to stop overfishing

February 6th the European Parliament finally voted to support sustainable fisheries, an issue we have told about many times on Tethys' blog.

Going much further than the Fisheries Council, the European Parliament voted to set an early date to end overfishing and to set a clear target to rebuild depleted fish stocks.
For decades, the European Union has failed to prevent overfishing but with this vote, called a "historic" one by Ocean 2012, an overwhelming majority, 502 vs. 137 members of the European Parliament, called for the restoration of fish stocks by 2020.
The strenght and diversity of Ocean 2012, combined with the effort of Greenpeace, WWF, Birdlife and Oceana and the popular support (the most recent one being "paint a fish" which produced 23.000 paintings) determined its influence.
Now the two bodies, the Parliament and Council, must negotiate a compromise, and the coming month will see intense discussions, but a significant step forward is done.
