Two beaked whales stranded alive in Sicily

On February 8th, two Cuvier’s beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) stranded alive in Sicily, Italy, close to Syracuse. The two cetaceans were promptly released at sea by the local Coast Guard, but the day after one of them stranded again at the same place. Again it was released with the help of a local rescue team .
As reported by Antonino Barlotta (from Sicily Wildlife Found), who examined the specimen stranded for the second time, there were no signs possibly related to an entanglement in a fishing gear, nor propeller cuts or other signs of collision with a ship.
A witness reported to the local Port Authority that early on the same morning the whale was repeatedly smashing its head against the nearby docks.
At the same time, there was a military naval exercise, "Proud Manta", involving submarines, going on in that very same area. (details ).

ITALIANO: L'8 febbraio scorso si erano spiaggiati due zifii (Ziphius cavirostris), vivi, lungo la costa siciliana, vicino a Siracusa. I due cetacei erano stati immediatamente riportati in mare dalla Guardia Costiera; il giorno successivo, però, uno dei due individui si era spiaggiato nuovamente nello stesso posto. Ancora, è stato riportato in mare, con l'aiuto di una squadra di intervento locale.
Come riferisce Antonino Barlotta, del Fondo Siciliano per la Natura, che ha esaminato il cetaceo spiaggiato per la seconda volta, non c'erano segni che l'animale si fosse impigliato in una rete da pesca, né aveva tagli imputabili ad eliche o altri segni di una collisione con una barca.
Un testimone riporta che la mattina lo zifio sbatteva ripetutamente la testa contro la banchina del porto.
